Simon's "1 Minute Money Message" (Episode 8): Tips for Saving Money at Christmas

Welcome to Episode 8 of "One Minute Money Message" where Simon will outline Simple Ideas to Grow, Protect and Manage Your Wealth.

Hi, so coming up is Christmas so here's 3 tips on ways to save money, and/or earn points when you're doing Christmas shopping.

First of all, make sure you compare prices before buying, that's the obvious one, but use technology. So most browsers like Google, Microsoft Edge have built in price tracking functions. So look up how to do that, and then track what you're trying to buy. You'll get alerts when prices are cheaper elsewhere.

There's also an external service which is called Zift. You can install that on your web browser to do the same thing, setting up alerts. That's Number One.

Number Two, use cash back sites or shopping portals of the major airlines frequent flyer programs. Cash back sites are usually free to join, always free to join rather, and you log in once your account's set up and basically it just takes you straight through to the website for the retailer that you want - that you would have done anyway. The difference is you'll get a few dollars back or a percent of your purchase through that scheme.

So the three main ones are CashRewards, Shopback and TopCashBack.

I personally use CashRewards and have been using it for years and probably had thousands of dollars of cash back over that time. My tip is if you do those cash backs every month or two, transfer the money to your account, whatever, depending on what the terms are, just in case they disappear with your money. Just a little, you know, safety tip.

Alternatively, frequent flyer portal. So both Qantas, I think it's called Qantas Mall, online mall and Velocity Virgin, same approach. Log in via your frequent flyer number.

They'll take you to your preferred website and instead of getting cash back, you'll get frequent flyer points if that's important to you.

And the Number Three idea, if you buy gift cards for presents, things like JB Hifi, EB Games, Ikea, you name it there's there's hundreds of them at the supermarket. Quite often both Flybuys and Everyday Rewards have like 10x or 20x the points that you know the for every dollar you spend on a gift card. So another no brainer if you're already buying gift cards and going to Coles.

Thanks for watching!
